“Play to Win: Why Self-Care Is the Strategy of Champions”
If you are a high performer it’s time we redefine recovery, energy, and inner defense.
Imagine you’re a hockey team battling your way through the playoffs. The Stanley Cup isn’t won with brute force alone — it’s won with smart strategy, endurance, and elite-level recovery between periods and games. This is the exact same mindset elite men and women must bring to self-care.
First let’s talk about your immune system. It is your defensive unit. The number one pairing. A virus or illness starts as subtle energy and then builds taking physical form, just like the opposing team slowly gaining momentum in a game. If your energy is depleted, it’s like playing with a defensive pair that has been on the ice for too long of a shift. Or worse, getting caught in a line change and leaving the defensive zone wide open. Self care is how you strengthen your inner defense. Hydration, breathwork, nutrition, sleep, boundaries-these are your star defensemen.
Secondly, a lack of self care is like having an empty net. Think of burnout, stress, and suppressed emotions as playing the final period with no goalie. When you don’t actively recharge, reflect, and reset, you’re leaving yourself vulnerable to energetic attacks-whether emotional, viral, or mental. High performers don’t just push hard. They protect their net with discipline
Third, intermission is a time for intentional recovery. Players don’t nap during intermission, they rehydrate, fuel up, reflect on plays, receive body work, adjust strategies, regroup as a team. This is real self care. It’s not a passive day at the spa, it’s active and intentional recalibration. Men, you need performance based rituals in your daily life to help you reset and restore your power:cold plunges, breathwork, intentional stillness, time in nature, deep presence.
Fourth, time spent between periods in any high performing locker room will be a time of mental reprogramming-strategy, clarity, leadership. Self-care is a mental reset. A time to reflect on what’s working, what’s not, and how to lead better. It’s not escaping. It’s refocusing. Find your “locker room”.” Whether that be in nature, your office, the sauna, a cabin in the woods etc. A place you can go to refocus when things get tough.
Five, energy is your MOST VALUABLE ASSET. A winning team manages energy better than the opponent. Not just brute effort-reserves, surges, recovery, and synergy. You don’t bring the same energy to every play, but you show up fully when it counts. Self-care teaches you to master your energy cycles, not waste them on distractions.
Six, winning the Stanley Cup is fulfilling a life purpose for many high caliber athletes. No one gets to hoist the Cup without discipline, recovery, and alignment. Men on a mission need more than hustle. They need rhythm, resilience, and self-leadership. If your mission, if your purpose is sacred-your business, your family, your legacy-then your energy is sacred too!
A Key Takeaway “If you want to lead like a champion, you need to recover like one.”
Self-care is not soft. It’s strategic. It’s masculine. It’s the difference between burnout and legacy.
The following are Journal Prompts for the Champion Within:
- Where in my life am I leaving the net wide open?
(What habits, stressors, or lack of recovery are making me vulnerable — physically, emotionally, or energetically?) - If I treated my body and energy like an elite athlete, what would need to change today?
(Think hydration, movement, nutrition, emotional regulation, sexual energy…) - What do I currently do between “periods” of effort — and is it helping me lead with clarity and presence or just numbing me out?
- What would it look like to bring more leadership into my self-care?
(What rhythms, rituals, or boundaries would support my purpose, presence, and connection with her?) - Where am I leaking energy in my relationship — and how might reclaiming that energy help me ignite her desire and deepen our connection?
